PROJECT OVERVIEW

The year-round population has grown significantly on Nantucket Island. This incredibly diverse community features over 140 nationalities. As the population has grown, so too has the demand for the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club (NBGC) to provide a safe location for kids to learn and grow. Unsure how to balance the right program with the unique costs and challenges of construction on an island, the NBGC approached Stanmar after watching us successfully build the Nantucket Hotel in six months.

Stanmar’s approach reconciled the NBGC’s program against their budget. We worked closely with the board to evaluate a range of cost-drivers—including how much to build new versus renovate, how to select on-island versus off-island subcontractors, how to prioritize a program that could provide multipurpose, revenue-generating opportunities, how to navigate the local approval process, and how to structure the project’s construction to facilitate the shortest shutdown possible for the NBGC.

Our solution included significantly reducing the planned renovation and adding an addition to control costs and deliver more space versatility. We collaboratively developed a program that included a two-court gymnasium, a commercial kitchen to facilitate revenue-generating opportunities, a computer lab for both children and adults, and a flexible multi-use space that could easily adapt as programmatic needs changed in the future.

Building on an island is exceptionally challenging and requires extensive strategic logistics planning. Stanmar vetted local subcontractors and, wherever possible, hired them. We planned all off-island materials deliveries astutely, navigating the first time Nantucket Bay froze over in over 30 years without schedule delays. Our construction schedule both minimized club downtime and avoided summer work when prices skyrocket.

The result was a project that fits into the fabric of Nantucket life. Delivered on time and on budget, we look forward to its support of Nantucket’s youth for generations to come.

Stanmar did a wonderful job providing us a Guaranteed Fixed Price package that we could take to donors. They also did a great job reaching out to all the local subcontractors, coordinating with off-island trades, and organizing housing and boat schedules. The finished building looks fantastic and I would work again with Stanmar in a heartbeat!
